Brief History of the Parish

St. Gregorios Indian Orthodox Cathedral, London is the first parish church of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in the United Kingdom. It is considered as the mother church of all other parishes and congregations in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. The extensive history of the parish can be traced all the way back to the 1930s with the visits of Abu Alexios of the Bethany monastery (later ishop Mar Theodosius).

In 1976, parishes outside Kerala were re-organized and grouped under the Diocese of Bombay. The then Diocesan Metropolitan HG. Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios on his episcopal visit declared the congregation as a Parish with St. Gregorios of Parumala as its patron saint. Rev. Fr. Abraham Aluckal (now bishop Mar Severios) was appointed as the first vicar of the parish. In the 1979 re-organization of the dioceses, the London Parish came under the Diocese of Delhi and had the privilege of pastoral care of eminent scholar late Dr. Paulos Mar Gregorios who visited the parish on a regular basis. When the new Diocese of Europe, UK and Canada was formed in 1993, this parish came under the jurisdiction of the elite late Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios. With the establishment of the new diocese of UK-Europe and Africa in 2009, H.G. Dr. Mathews Mar Thimothios took charge as the Metropolitan. The Parish is ever grateful for the relentless services of Rev. Fr Abraham John (late lamented Paulose Mar Pachomios), Rev. Fr. Mathews M. Daniel, Fr. Philipose Thomas (late lamented Philipose Mar Eusebios), Late Ver. Rev. Kuriakose Cor-Episcopa, Rev. Fr. O. Thomas, Rev. Fr. George Kurian (H.G. Geevarghese Mar Coorilos), Rev. Fr. V.M. James (H.G. Yakob Mar Elias), Very Rev. Fr. Thomas Yohannan Ramban, Very Rev. Fr. Skariah Ramban, Rev. Fr. Abraham Thomas (H.G. Abraham Mar Stephanos), Rev. Fr. John Samuel, Rev. Fr. Thomas P John, Rev. Fr. Dr. Ninan V. George, Rev. Fr. Aby Philip and Rev. Fr. Nithin Prasad Koshy who served in succession as Vicars of the parish.

The Parish has been fortunate to be able to conduct services in the heart of the great city Of London since 1978 on all Sundays in the beautiful St. Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe Church by the generosity of Church of England. The church building was secured by the relentless effort of late Rev Fr. K.A. George from the generous Lord Bishop of London. H.H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews I, sanctified and celebrated Holy Liturgy in August 1979, The current church building, was originally the church hall of St. Peter’s of Brockley, was secured in 2005. The dedication and consecration ceremony was conducted by H.G. Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios, the then Diocesan bishop on the 1st January 2005.
